French Language and Civilization program at IEFE University of Montpellier combined with Institutions & community service .

The Institut Méditerranéen de Langues et Services (IMLS) is a center that aims at combining education with culture. It forms the strategic center between universities in Montpellier and abroad and offers specific services for students wishing to study in France and to immerse themselves in French culture.

Periods of study

  • Fall : September to December
  • Spring : mid-January to mid-May

16 class hours/week (208 hours per semester)

University vacations

  • Two weeks for Christmas
  • One week in February/March
  • Two weeks around Easter

Orientation

The first week is devoted to :

  • The welcoming of students
  • A guided tour of Montpellier
  • Administrative procedures : university registration, banks, insurance…
  • Level tests of written and spoken French (CEFR)
  • Placements in community service agencies

This is also when final registration at university is processed.

Course organization

There are six levels, which correspond to competency in French language and culture.

Placement tests (oral and written) are organized at the beginning of each semester. Students are then assigned to groups, according to their scores.

The Common European Framework divides learners into three broad divisions which can be divided into six levels:

  • Additional electives: for levels B1 to C2:

2 electives to be selected (1 ½ hour/each week)

  • B1: Cinema, Southern French civilization, Culture and Heritage, French applied to the social and economic fields, History of Art, Literature
  • B2: Cinema, Business French, French for environmental studies, History of Art, Literature and oral expression, Theater
  • C1 & C2: Creative writing, Cinema, Business French, French for environmental studies, History of Art, Literature

Registration at the institute gives students the possibility to attend, as auditing students, selected classes at the university during the academic year (lectures only). This possibility is available during the registration period at the IEFE.

Assessment conditions consist in

  • Periodic assessment which requires regular class attendance
  • Mid-term exams
  • Final exams

Diplomas issued by University Montpellier 3 (equivalence and exemption for Fall & Spring programs at IEFE )

Students have the possibility of taking:

  • The Practical Certificate in French as a Foreign Language (first level) after attending a level III course for one semester (5 months)
  • The Diploma of French Studies (second level) after attending a level IV course for one semester (5 months)
  • The Special Diploma of French Studies (third level) after attending a level V for two semesters (10 months)
  • The Higher Diploma of French Studies (third level) after attending a level V course for two semesters (10 months)
  • The Higher Diploma of French Studies is particularly designed for students who plan to attend subsequently a degree program in Modern French Literature or in Language Sciences

Transcripts delivered

Transcripts from the IMLS are sent along with original grades from the University of Montpellier

  • French language, culture and civilization: 15 recommended US credits (university)
  • French Institutions: 3 recommended US credits

French Language and Culture combined with Institutions in French Society with Service-Learning

The academic program can be combined with community service and a 26 hour course minimum on French Institutions (optional)
This program allows foreign students to get involved in the community as volunteers. It is carried out through volunteer work coupled with a study program.
The Institut Meditérranéen de Langues (IMLS) organizes the placement in a number of service agencies depending on the needs, student’s skills and interests.

Over the last ten years students from various foreign universities have been responding enthusiastically to this alternative form of education.

Practical information

Cultural activities

They are an important supplement of the classes: they introduce students to the region's architectural heritage, landscape, touristic sites in the area and its cities.

Excursions are organized every month.

Accomodation

The students may choose between: Host families (half-board : breakfast and dinner included) or Residence-hotels.

Meals

Students can have lunch in university refectories (the university refectories are closed on Sundays). Breakfast and dinner are provided by the host family.
Students can buy meal tickets from CROUS in Montpellier (note that the full rate for a ticket meal is about 5 euros

Registration conditions

Students must be 18 years of age or over. The application form must be returned:

  • before June 29th for the Fall session,
  • before November 23rd for the Spring session

Students must be protected by insurance covering accidents, hospitalization and/or repatriation.

Reception

  • If you arrive by train: The meeting point is in the SNCF railway station upstairs . Your host family will be waiting for you
  • If you arrive by road: please contact IMLS
  • If you arrive by air: Your family will be waiting for you at the airport.
