Winter Short-Term Volunteer Program in Montpellier

French language course

Development of French language skills through interactive on-going communication related to participants level of fluency.

This program includes a French language course and a service learning project supplemented by lectures on French Institutions and Culture.

Requirements

Our Winter Program allows students with an interest in the French culture and the desire to perform volunteer work the chance to live with a host family and experience French life first-hand.
There is no language requirement. You must be in good academic standing in order to apply and applications are welcome from students in all majors.

NOTE: No visa required

Academics

This program carries 3 credits. To earn those credits, in addition to your on-site participation, you will be required to submit a report on your community service work and an essay on a specific aspect of your experience in France.
 
The Winter Program is supplemented by an additional course on French Institutions and culture and supervised community service.

The course is taught in French/English, depending on language skills. It deals with the major issues at stake in French society and the way they are met by institutions and associations. It complements students volunteer activities, linking traditional learning and experimentation.

Community Service

The social service activities are organized according to the requirements of our partner associations, the requests of the participating students, their abilities and aspirations and after studying their application forms.

Typical partner associations provide services to children, the elderly, and handicapped individuals, including visits, tutoring, arts and recreation, and other activities provided on site.

Support Services

On-site support for the program is organized by the staff of the Institut Mediterranee de Langues (IML) in the center of Montpellier. This includes arranging pick-up upon arrival in Montpellier, host family housing, access to internet services, excursions, supervision of community service activities, and general advisement. 

At the start of the program, on-site orientation is combined with presentation of volunteer opportunities. There is a general orientation held prior to departure, and advisers are available to assist with other matters.

Housing

Participants live with host families. Housing arrangements are organized by the staff of the Institut Mediterraneen de Langues (IML). Academic year students may request assistance in finding other types of housing.
