The Institute for International Business offers a unique combination of studying in a small-town college and working at an internship in New York City. Spend the first half of your sixteen-week semester at the State University of New York studying business, public relations, business English and American culture. Then, move to New York City for the second half your adventure, where you will work in a full-time unpaid internship.

1.Academic Program

During your two-month stay at SUNY, you will participate in a rigorous academic program that includes the courses listed below:

Business Courses

Students join American and other international students in two business classes at the graduate or undergraduate level based upon your current academic preparation). You may choose from courses in marketing, finance, consumer behavior, economics, human resources, organizational behavior, and others. You will join these full-semester classes for the first half of the semester.

Public Relations

You will study public relations in a course designed especially for the IIB students. Taught by several SUNY professors and instructors from the SUNY Department of Communication and Media, all experienced experts in the field, this course covers such topics as persuasion and public opinion, the electronic media, the mass media, international advertising, news releases, and much more. Case studies are an integral part of the course, and you will have a chance to try your hand at writing press releases.

Business English & American Business culture

In this course designed especially for the IIB students, you will learn the American style of business writing and speaking. You will get a chance to write business letters and memos and do a business report complete with an oral presentation. All the while, you will be improving your grammar, fluency, and vocabulary in the language that has become the major language of business and travel throughout the world.

2.Internships in New York City

After your eight weeks studying at SUNY, continue the adventure at a full-time unpaid internship in New York City in one of the following industries:

  • Marketing
  • Public Relations
  • Event Management
  • Entertainment and Media
  • Sports
  • Finance
  • Non-profit
  • Museums
  • Fashion

You may find yourself working at a world-famous public relations company, or a small, dynamic new public relations firm. Or you may work in a world-class museum or a small event management company. The numerous companies and non-profit organizations that have sponsored our students run the gamut, and we will try to make a match for you that uses your current skills and points you in the career direction you want.

This opportunity will give you a glimpse into American business practice while you are improving your business skills and your English ability, making you more marketable both at home and in the global economy.

Fee : $10,450

Including:

  • Housing for academic portion in New Paltz
  • Housing for academic portion in New York City
  • Full time internship at a company in New York City
  • Internship administration
  • Program tuition and fees
  • Use of university campus facilities (including new fitness center, library, student union etc.)
  • Meal plan while in New Paltz
  • Social events (e.g. welcome and graduation receptions)
  • Group transportation from the airport to New Paltz
  • Group transportation to New York City residence
  • Issuance of the DS- 2019 & DS 7002 for J-1 Intern status
  • Health insurance for duration of the program (including 30-day grace period)

Fee does not include:

  • Airfare
  • Meals & incidentals in New York City
  • Course textbooks (approximately $400)
  • Incidental personal expenses

Credit cards and bank debit cards are universally accepted. You should arrange for a wire transfer of the program fee after you have been accepted by the program. This should be done no later than mid-August for the fall program and mid-december for the Spring program.

Application requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age by start of program
  • Have completed at least 2 years of post-secondary education, with a major in business, communications or a closely related field
  • Currently be a student at a university/college or have graduated less than 12 months ago
  • Have 6 months, or more, of work experience (this may be waived) or applied internship experience
  • Have attained a score of 80 or better on the TOEFL or equivalent test of English

Required Application documents

  • IIB Application (signed)
  • Copy of a valid passport – photo page
  • Motivational letter (brief description of why you would like to participate in this program
  • Two letters of recommendation (English), from people who are able to assess your suitability for the program
  • Academic transcripts from post-secondary education (If transcript does not include current courses please submit an addendum to the transcript)
  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Curriculum vitae/Resume in English
  • Proof of financial ability to complete this program

You will need to provide us with a letter from your sponsor stating that he or she is sponsoring you if you are being sponsored by someone other than yourself. Finally, we must receive a statement from your bank or your sponsor's bank saying that you or your sponsor has $15,000 at your or his disposal. This figure includes the $10,450 program fee and additional expenses such as textbooks (which may cost more than $400), personal expenses, and emergency expenses (which we hope you will not need). The sponsor letter and bank statement should be sent to us as soon as you are accepted into the program since we cannot issue you visa documents without them. The DS-2019 Ds7002 are the documents you will need to take to your nearest U.S. consulate or embassy to get your J-1 visa.
